Penn State Beaver Wrestlers Compete For First Time at W & J Open
Washington, PA- For the first time in program history, the Penn State Beaver wrestling team took the mat for competition at the Washington & Jefferson Wrestling Open.
In the 149 pound division, sophomore Dylan Winkle (Hopewell/Aliquippa, PA) lost his first round match 6-0 to Jacob Durbin of Penn State Fayette. In the losers bracket, Winkle was knocked out of the tournament with an 8-0 loss to Tony D'Urso of Mercyhurst.
In the 157 division, Freshman Bob Tempalski (Hopewell/Hookstown, PA) was pinned by Jordan Shall of Mercyhurst at the 3:57 mark. In the losers bracket match-up, Tempalski fell 5-1 to Tyler Berger of Mercyhust. Also competing in the 157 division was junior Kevin Rice (Lower Daughin/Elizabethtown, PA). Rice was pinned at the 2:39 mark in the first round by Cory Disbennett of Mount St Joseph's. In the losers bracket, Rice went lost to David Cawley of Pitt Johnstown.
Competing in the 184 division, Sophomore Tairo Maas (West Allegheny/Imperial, PA) lost to Drew Graber of Manchester and David Keyhart of Pitt Johnstown.
In the 285 weight class, sophomore Wessley Mummert (Red Lion/York, PA) brought home the first victory for the program, defeating Gabe Zimmerly from Manchester 5-4. In the second round, Mummert lost to Drake Kowchuck of West Liberty. In the losers bracket, Mummert fell to Zach Baker of Pitt Johnstown.
The wrestling team will open up PSUAC play on Wednesday, November 16th, when they travel to Penn State DuBois. The match is scheduled for 7 p.m.
