New Kensington, PA - Penn State Beaver split its April 17, 2026 doubleheader, rallying for an 8–5 win in Game 1 before falling 6–3 in Game 2. In the opener, Beaver used a decisive five-run fifth inning to break a 5–5 tie after a back-and-forth start marked by early run trading and defensive miscues, then shut the door late. In Game 2, Beaver again competed early—striking first in the second and staying within a run through five—but a pair of three-run innings by the home side proved too much to overcome despite a late push in the seventh.
At the plate in Game 1, Nicholas Campbell powered the offense, going 2-for-3 with a three-run day that included a two-run homer in the fifth. Matthew Helmer Jr. also delivered in the middle of the order, finishing 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI, while Christopher Cann added an RBI single. On the bases, Beaver was aggressive with multiple steals, and on the mound Andres Molinar earned the win (1–0) with 5.0 innings of relief, allowing just 1 run on 4 hits while striking out 4. Starter Nathan Doutt worked 2.0 innings, with Beaver's defense charged with two errors behind him.
In Game 2, Beaver totaled seven hits and four walks, led by Mason Hsu (1-for-4) who drove in the team's final run with an RBI single in the seventh and also swiped a bag. Jameson Stubbs went 1-for-3 with a double and a walk, while Nicholas Campbell reached base three times (1-for-1, two walks). Philip Betz scored in the second, and Rheece Barone (1-for-3) came around in the fifth during a rally sparked by aggressive baserunning. On the mound, Nicholas Hayes took the loss (5.0 IP, 9 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, 1 HR) and Ian Butler allowed three runs in the sixth (1.0 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 1 K, 1 HR). Beaver played clean defense with no errors.
Across the two games, the difference came down to timely hitting and execution in key moments. In the opener, Beaver capitalized on four defensive errors and delivered its biggest swings in the fifth—Helmer Jr.'s go-ahead knock followed by Campbell's two-run blast—to create separation, pairing opportunistic offense with steady relief pitching to secure the win despite being out-hit 9–7. In Game 2, Beaver showed resilience with speed and situational hitting and strong on-base production at the top of the lineup, but couldn't fully overcome the opponent's midgame power surge.
