Monaca, PA - Penn State Beaver split a high-scoring doubleheader at home on Monday, April 6, dropping the opener 13–6 before bouncing back with a 7–3 win in the nightcap. The first game was tightly contested early—scoreless through three and tied 1–1 after four—before a decisive middle-inning surge by the visitors created a deficit Beaver couldn't overcome despite a late push. In game two, Beaver found itself trailing early again but responded with resilience, chipping away before erupting for a six-run sixth inning to turn a 3–1 deficit into a comfortable victory. Across both games, Beaver showed offensive consistency, combining patient at-bats with timely hitting to stay competitive throughout the day.
Offensively, Beaver was led by Christopher Cann (2-for-4, 2 RBI) and Jameson Stubbs (2-for-2, RBI, sac fly), while Andres Molinar went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Nicholas Campbell added an RBI single, and Mason Hsu reached base twice (1-for-4 with a walk) and scored. On the mound, Nathan Doutt worked 5.1 innings, allowing six runs (four earned) with four strikeouts; the bullpen struggled to stop the bleeding as Beaver finished with two defensive errors and the staff issued six walks overall.
Offensively, Christopher Cann delivered the standout performance, going 3-for-4 with a double, a triple, and four RBIs, including a pivotal three-run triple in the sixth. Mason Hsu reached base three times (2-for-2 with a walk), scored twice, and drove in a run, while Rome Requena added an RBI via walk and scored during the rally. On the mound, Kairu Fujinuma worked five innings, allowing three runs (one earned) on five hits with two strikeouts, and Nicholas Hayes closed the door with two scoreless innings, giving up one hit while striking out two.
Across the doubleheader, Beaver showed both its vulnerabilities and its resilience. In game one, a combination of free passes, defensive miscues, and one damaging inning proved too much to overcome, even with a productive offensive showing and a five-run rally that briefly narrowed the gap. In contrast, game two highlighted Beaver's ability to respond under pressure, using disciplined at-bats and timely extra-base hits to seize control late. The split moved Beaver to 13–11 overall and 6–1 in conference play, reinforcing a key theme: when execution tightens—especially in run prevention and limiting mistakes—this team has the offensive firepower and pitching stability to win in multiple ways.
The team will take the field once again on Saturday, April 11th at 2pm and 4pm when they take on Penn State Fayette in the home portion of their series. For all things Penn State Beaver Baseball check out beaverathletics.com!
